[GREEN MONDAY SERIES] Vietnam annually Wastes almost 4 BILLION USD Worth of Food

In the Asia-Pacific region, Vietnam currently ranks second with over 8 million tons of food lost or thrown away each year that could still be used or salvaged, causing a damage of approximately 3.9 billion USD annually, accounting for nearly 2% of the current GDP.

Globally, approximately one-third of the food produced each year (equivalent to 1.3 billion tons) is lost or wasted, while nearly 800 million people are still facing poverty and malnutrition. Alarmingly, food waste is to be responsible for about approximately 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating climate change, loss of biodiversity, and environmental pollution.

How can we avoid waste and help the environment breathe easier? It’s simple; you can start with small actions as follows:

1. Eat all the food left in your refrigerator and don’t hesitate to get creative with new dishes from leftover ingredients!

2. Only shop for what is necessary and plan meals to avoid excess.

3. Share leftover food with friends, family, or those in need.
