According to the analytics from online platforms, each year, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) receives the attention of more than 60,000 prospective learners and is the home of knowledge of 30,000 learners at all levels and study modes. This is partly due to the "belief" in the leading quality of UEH programs. At UEH, students of all fields and majors are equipped with 6 particularly special subjects associated with the times and sustainable development to solve environmental problems in the economic and social development process. What are these subjects in specific?

The Multidisciplinary and Sustainable University Strategy 2021-2030 desires to upgrade the image of UEH to become a new-generation university, linking multi-disciplinary knowledge with global issues. The output is learners oriented to become citizens capable of global integration, high-quality personnel in diverse fields, and those working for sustainable development – From UEH Learners to Empowered Global Citizens for Sustainable Development.

Playing a central role, UEH’s training activities have been gradually integrating multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and cross-disciplinary knowledge with global issues and the 17 Development Goals of the United Nations (17 SGDs) into 56 study fields and majors of the school. This is reflected in the regular redesign and review of the entire course syllabus, output standards, learning materials in each discipline, major, roadmap, and module.

Accordingly, the outstanding distinction of graduates from UEH is that they are all equipped with knowledge in 6 subjects related to current trends and the times, including Sustainable Development, Introduction to Data Science, Soft Skills, Entrepreneurship, Psychology Fundamentals, and Design Thinking.

1. Sustainable Development

Sustainable development and action are efforts receiving global attention and UEH itself. To do that, each learner needs to accommodate themselves with fundamental knowledge, which is the foundation for integrating with the school and community to solve environmental problems in the process of economic and social development. The Sustainable Development Course at UEH helps learners to understand basic concepts and principles of sustainable development; to explain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the interdependence between the SDGs and the corresponding solution framework to address global challenges, to guide business decisions and community development; to analyze the role of economic growth and sustainable activity in creating a balanced and resilient economy; to recognize the social dimensions of sustainable development, including social inclusion, human development and community empowerment; to describe key environmental issues, design appropriate strategies and manage resources towards sustainable development; and to explain the role of institutions and partnerships in implementing sustainable development goals.

2. Soft Skills

In addition to specific knowledge, soft skills are considered indispensable and increasingly necessary for Gen Z and Alpha. Born and raised with the coverage of technology and virtual space, in addition to outstanding digital skills, this generation needs additional social interaction and self-creation skills to become a perfect version.

The Soft Skills module is applied at UEH to students of all majors. Learners are trained in 3 basic and important skills including Working skills, Building unique qualities, and Building core competencies. This helps UEH students overcome barriers and be ready to effectively access the learning and working environment both domestically and internationally.

3. Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship is the economic launching pad for a country to move forward. Some mistakenly believe that starting a business is only necessary for entrepreneurs and founders of new businesses.

UEH believes that entrepreneurial knowledge and skills are the formula to help human resources continuously advance in the large labor market. It is the understanding of professional procedures under the mindset of a person who owns a business that plays a key role in conceiving innovative business models. With the Entrepreneurship module, all UEH students can understand the fundamentals of business startups, innovation, identifying business opportunities, ideas, models, and forming projects, in addition to knowledge about business law, intellectual property law, business franchising, and the ethics and social responsibility of an entrepreneur.

4. Psychology

Although careers diversify with distinct specialties, in the end, they all include the interaction processes among humans both internally (within organizations, departments, or teams) and externally (among partners, customers, community, or society). Understanding human psychology and behavior is the foundation for other specialized subjects, the basis for an individual to understand and choose appropriate ways of thinking and behaving in the living, studying, and working environment for interactions in social relationships. This is also necessary knowledge for an individual to understand and overcome their own psychological problems during the process of growing up.

At UEH, the Psychology module provides learners with basic knowledge of psychology, understandings of human behaviors, and the applications of psychology in different areas of social life.

5. Design Thinking (Solving problems with design thinking)

Problem-solving skill is required for a UEH student during the formal and extracurricular learning process until they are involved in the labor market. This process does not simply mean applying knowledge ; in fact, a series of knowledge transformations using design thinking.

At UEH, learners can integrate early with the pace of learning and high-level output standards right from the first year they learn about Design Thinking. This is a subject that helps learners explain the concept of design thinking, applications, and main stages of this process; understand, differentiate, and know how to apply observation and analysis techniques, survey techniques, user experience, critical thinking, planning, selection and application of appropriate design thinking processes in their works, therfore, applying it to solve problems that constantly arise in life and work.

6. Introduction To Data Science

Big Data is one of the most exciting indicators of the 4.0 Digital Era, which is a consequence of various trends: Internet of Things (IoT), Uploading, Cloud, Open Source, and most recently, Machine Learning. Over time, data plays an important role in every field and every working platform. Data-based decision making helps increase accuracy and optimize resources. Therefore, data mining and reading has become an indispensable competency.

At UEH, learners are equipped with this competency through the Introduction to Science and Data course right from the first year of study. The course equips them with basic understanding of Data Science, the role and application of Data Science in a variety of fields, processes and data analysis methods used to solve related problems. This helps each UEH student have the knowledge and skills to collect and analyze data and build effective organizational models for application in diverse fields.

With the view that each UEH student is the subject of the global future, UEH has been a pioneer in welcoming new knowledge trends in the process of training, research, operation, administration, and community engagement. Generations of learners capable of solving problems with a flexible mindset, comprehensive skills, and multi-disciplinary knowledge are at the "heart" of the Multidisciplinary and Sustainable Strategy that UEH is pursuing.
