11.4. Sustainable practices

11.4.3. Allow remote working

Blended Learning and Hybrid working approaches at University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City

UEH has been increasingly recognizing the benefits of online learning and remote working policies as part of a forward-thinking approach to both education and employment. By promoting and standardizing telecommuting or remote working for faculty and staff, the university can boost flexibility, reduce environmental impact, and improve work-life balance. The teaching method applied at UEH effectively combines online learning with a learner-centered approach, thereby enhancing lifelong learning for students. Notably, UEH is implementing the “Blended Classroom” and “Hybrid Classroom” methods in its teaching practices. These methods help maintain continuous and efficient learning and research processes for students, overcoming barriers of space, time, and even pandemics, while also allowing students easy access to online learning resources.

On the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2023, from January 9, 2023 to January 15, 2023 (the week before Tet) and from January 30, 2023 to February 5, 2023 (the week after Tet), UEH officially implements online teaching and learning for all training systems and levels in Ho Chi Minh City and other localities. The reasons are that we want to create favorable conditions for learners and lecturers to arrange travel plans during the peak period of the traditional Tet holiday, both avoiding traffic jams and balancing travel costs; at the same time, proactively arranging schedules, rest time, and reasonable entertainment during the Tet holiday. It still ensures that all training activities of the university take place according to the school year plan, helping UEHers work and study effectively.

Besides, shifting to online meetings, conferences has become a key strategy for UEH aiming to reduce travel time, cut emissions, and enhance operational efficiency. By replacing in-person meetings with virtual ones, universities can significantly minimize the need for employees, faculty, and even students to travel to campus or between campuses, resulting in lower carbon emissions and a smaller environmental footprint.

Online meetings, conferences not only save time and reduce transportation costs but also create a more flexible and inclusive work environment. Faculty and staff from multiple departments, campuses from HCMC and Vinh Long or other countries can easily collaborate without geographical constraints. This inclusivity can encourage wider participation, as virtual attendance makes it easier for those who might otherwise be unable to attend due to travel time or personal commitments. For university staff who split their time between teaching and research, online meetings make it simpler to balance their schedules effectively.

Up to now, all meetings at UEH can be transferred immediately into online and hybrid.
