On October 7, 2024, Hanoi ranked first in the world for air pollution index (AQI 174). Concurrently, Ho Chi Minh City ranked seventh with an AQI of 147.

Air pollution causes approximately 7 million deaths each year globally, with 2.2 million cases occurring specifically in the Western Pacific region. In Vietnam, approximately 60,000 people die each year related to air pollution.

The "culprits" causing pollution include: fine particulate matter PM2.5, carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). In particular, PM2.5 - generated from fuel combustion - can sneak deep into the lungs and bloodstream, harming the heart and respiratory system.

According to the EPA, this level of air pollution can cause numerous health problems, especially for sensitive groups like children, the elderly, and those with lung conditions.
