This is the first zero-waste university project in the country, recently piloted at the Nguyen Van Linh campus (Binh Chanh district, Ho Chi Minh City).
Associate Professor Bui Quang Hung, Vice Rector of the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, stated that with the aim of implementing the 3R model (Reduce - Reuse - Recycle) and constructing a waste-free university to provide a green, clean, and beautiful learning environment, “UEH Zero Waste Campus” is the first project in sustainable green living at the university.
Phase 1, themed “Rethink - Be Green”, aims to achieve a 40% reduction in overall waste and a 30% reduction in single-use plastic waste, while ensuring at least 70% of students and university staff have a clear understanding of what constitutes zero waste.
"This is also the inaugural project for the journey of building and developing a multi-disciplinary and sustainable UEH University, showcasing UEH commitment to implementing the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals” - shared Pr. Hung.
The project proposes innovative solutions that prioritize the application of the 3R model in waste sorting and treatment. It also integrates technology in educational methods and communication strategies, placing users at the center to highlight the project's benefits and promote a circular economy. Notably, actor Trong Hieu will be involved in accompanying the project, spreading inspiration and promoting green living and the “Rethink - Be Green” message.
The project, designed to be completed by 2025, sets milestones to produce environmentally-conscious UEH citizens, partners, and communities, fostering sustainable development.
Moreover, aiming to connect internal and external resources and disseminate information to the community, the “UEH Zero Waste Campus” project is participating in the international competition “The Zero Waste City Challenge”, organized by the non-governmental organization Waste Aid. This project from the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City has reached the finals of the competition in Vietnam, scheduled for October 19th.
